Lake County Music Guide – 2.27.24

Right now, I’m running on half strength and utilizing only half a brain. My surgery was a success, but the new brain takes a bit more time to really kick in. Please forgive me for being so late, so lifeless, and so brief. Here’s the live music report for the week of February 27th through March 4th…

Lake County Music Guide – 2.13.24

I don’t have a bucket list, but if I did, at the top of that list would be for me to someday play guitar on stage with the Southern All Stars, a band that has been among the most popular bands in Japan for the last forty-five years. I watched “Southern All Stars Chigasaki Live” on Netflix Saturday night and was thoroughly amazed at how good they were – domo arigato. Well, over here in the Western Hemisphere, where this week, Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day fall back-to-back, here’s the live music schedule for the week of 2/13 through 2/19…

Lake County Music Guide – 2.6.24

I was driving from Clearlake to Upper Lake Sunday evening, and I noticed the lake’s water level was getting ever so close to the highway level. Big time, wowza! My car has all-wheel drive, and it still was hydroplaning a little bit. Thankfully, the worst is over, and the really bad rainy/windy days are alternating throughout the next week. Be careful out there, folks. Here’s the live music guide for the week of 2/6 through 2/12…

Deep Heart’s Core

Two days into her retirement from the elementary school where she’d taught fifth grade for 30 years, Pam called her brother, Alan. Alan lived on the opposite side of the county in a small, Craftsman-style home on Clear Lake.  “I’m taking you up on your offer to hang out for a day or two.”

Holiday Reading from The Bloom: A Child’s Christmas in Wales

Over the years, our family has enjoyed some Christmas reading. We’ve read through The Little Match Girl, The Elves and the Shoemaker, A Christmas Carol, Sherlock Holmes and The Adventures of the Blue Carbuncle, and many other great stories. But one of our favorites is poet Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales, which we read every Christmas Eve. It’s a beautiful story that shares Christmas memories from over one hundred years ago. If you’re looking for an enjoyable short read, here’s a link to a public domain version:http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks07/0701261h.html

Backstage Lake County: Merry Christmas, Scrooge!

The creative team at New Vintage Productions has partnered with the Soper Reese Theatre to bring a classic Dickens tale to life, but with a couple of twists.  Merry Christmas, Scrooge! is an original, locally written play that retells the story of A Christmas Carol with a little help from Santa’s elves.  And, the entire cast is made up of kids and teens ranging from ages 6 to 17.

LCTC Announces Opening Night of 9 To 5: 10.27.23

There are some lines that are just so iconic that they conjure up memories as soon as you hear them. Think, “Nobody puts Baby in a corner,” or “There’s no crying in baseball!” One of those lines for me is, “sexist, egotistical lying hypocritical bigot.” I loved the movie 9 To 5 when it came out in the 80s. And I’m super excited for the latest production by the Lake County Theatre Company (LCTC). 9 To 5 The Musical is based on the movie and features lyrics and music by Dolly Parton. Patricia Resnick along with Colin Higgins wrote the original screenplay for the film and Resnick also wrote the book for the musical.

“The Only Smoke They Should be Exposed to” – Prizewinning Essay by Alani Ethelbah

They hadn’t come home in a long time. That’s why the elders are mad. The roundhouse is a sacred place for our people. It’s where we go to bring in the new year, to give the newborn babies their native names, to celebrate our strawberry festival. It’s where we go to heal and connect with our culture and pay respect to our traditions. Yet there are people who turn their backs to it all. People who never come home. The elders are mad. They say that these people have lost their way. That they are poisoned. No good.
