When the stars align and the universe nods in agreement with our wishes, sometimes the sunshine reminds us of its will–to burn away the clouds and winter chill. It’s here to restore, refresh and stretch its rays far and wide for all to marvel in its splendor. The earth’s curve is best seen on the open shoreline. Perfection is only added when the occasional rock breaks the flow of waves and changing current. Sometimes playful splashes against the rock edges catch our eye. Other times a gentle rocking motion of the sea as if dancing with its partner, showing all her skill that draws us in. It’s mesmerizing, her motion, like nature’s television–only the show never gets old or boring. Is there really a season to not enjoy a trip to the ocean when the weather is fair? I think not. When the stars align and there isn’t enough time to pack the perfect picnic to catch mother nature’s glory, never fear. A quick stop and you will have all the essentials for your day on the beach at Duncans Mills.
If your morning’s coffee has let you down already, head on over to Gold Coast Coffee and Bakery for a cup of joe, a latte or a bold cappuccino, my personal favorite. But what coffee is complete without a pastry or two? The sticky buns are to die for when warmed up. They have that perfect texture of soft firmness that only comes from homemade dough. For a savory treat and healthier breakfast option, the warm turkey pesto or veggie gallete is flavorful–its savory substance filling enough to give you the best start to your day.
Or, depending on the time of day, grab some of their stone fire pizza served by the slice. That might be the better option as its thick crust doesn’t easily dry out. There’s just a little bit of something for everyone. And with plenty of patio seating, there’s no need to rush the day.
After a day’s drive visiting the sights, perhaps a visit to Goat Rock for a leisurely stroll exploring the mouth of the Russian River or a tour of the historic Fort Ross further up Highway 1. Not only can you walk inside these historic buildings that make up the Fort, but do take a minute to enjoy the video in the visitors center to learn more details about the history of the Fort. It’s a step back in time when California was still the wild wild west, untamed but full of hope and promises.
With many pull over opportunities, short trails with scenic views all along Highway 1, it’s nearly impossible to not be wowed by the California coastline with only twenty-five miles or so of driving just outside of town. So take your time and savor the beauty.
Now that you’ve worked up an appetite exploring the coast, head back to Duncans Mills for dinner! For a casual family-friendly atmosphere, a win-win for everyone is the Blue Heron Restaurant and Tavern. Built back in the 1800s, its redwood walls hold stories and memories of travelers and locals alike swapping stories in the bar while sipping on beer. Families in the dining room share about their favorite part of the day on the beach, their rosy cheeks and big eyes remembering each special moment.
There, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with various choices from the classic Fish and Chips or Burger. One of my favorites is the blue cheese mushroom burger. What’s not to love about that combination? For a healthier and just as delicious option, try one of their fresh, crisp seasonal salads, including one of my favorites, the beet salad. And with an array of beers on tap, it’s sure to quench anyone’s thirst.
Whether you have time for just a quick stop on your way to or from your destination, Duncans Mills has just about all you need. But be forewarned its rustic charm, friendly atmosphere, and many distractions may compel you to stay longer than intended. But isn’t that all part of the day’s adventure after all?
