Sometimes I just crave a good diner. I wake up in the morning with a stack of pancakes on my mind, crispy country-style potatoes, and maybe even some corned beef hash or a tasty plate of Eggs Benedict. And even though I make wonderful breakfasts at home, there is just something special about sitting down at a Formica table and sipping percolated coffee with unlimited refills. When that feeling hits me, I have a list of my favorite places in Lake County to get great diner food. Here are five of them.

2. Santana’s Cottage
With an open kitchen and happy chatter, Santana’s Cottage feels like a local establishment whether you’re from town or not. Now comes the tricky part: breakfast or lunch—or, depending on the time of day, a little bit of both. The light, fluffy berry crepe overflows with blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, while the Portabella Mushroom Burger offers something warm, savory, and filling. Whether it’s a play day, boat day, or business day in Lakeport, Santana’s Cottage will make a bright spot in it.
3. Shoreline Coffee Shop
Shoreline has a homey feel, as though it looked just like this in the 1950s, when relatives would enjoy a Sunday brunch here. Friends meet over breakfast chats and lunchtime conversations while the attentive service keeps the coffee cups full. The corned beef hash has that crisp, chewy texture I remember from my favorite childhood breakfasts, and the Eggs Benedict is exactly the way a good diner should make it. Shoreline is a step back in time to large portions, rich food, and friendly service.
4. Judy’s Junction
From floor to ceiling, Judy’s Junction feels like visiting Grandma’s house—if Grandma lived in the country and wasn’t afraid to show it. The atmosphere is nostalgic and comforting, but one memory quickly returns to me when the dishes begin arriving: come hungry. The chicken-fried steak dwarfs the hash browns, and the mile-high biscuits are light, fluffy, and unlike any biscuits I have seen before. Judy’s Junction is everything you hope to find in a diner: generous comfort food, warm hospitality, and a casual, come-as-you-are atmosphere.
5. Country Kitchen
Just off the highway in Clearlake Oaks, you’ll find Country Kitchen. What makes this restaurant special is that when you go, you have choices. You’ll find a menu full of classic diner food from biscuits and gravy to the “Original Hobo Breakfast”, all of which fill the plate and leave you stuffed. But they also have a full selection of quality, homestyle Mexican breakfasts such as chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, and huevos con chorizo. Add these quality dishes to a menu stuffed with sandwiches, fries, burritos, and enchiladas, and you’re certain to find the perfect meal.
