Four Great South Lake County Wineries Perfect for Picnics

One of my favorite months of the year is May. Not only does it continue to bring spring flowers, but also picnics! With North America’s oldest freshwater lake, mountains, parks, vineyards, and wineries, it would seem Lake County was destined to be a picnic paradise. Drive just about any direction, and a scenic view made to enjoy awaits. And if you love wine, here are some of the most scenic spots and fantastic wine picnic spots in South County.

  1. There’s no better way to start your visit to Lake County than a leisurely stop at Cache Creek Vineyards and Winery just off Highway 20. Here, you’ll find all things Western, welcoming, and right at home. Cache Creek is all about the outdoor experience, with plenty of green grass and picnic tables to choose from to unwind with sights of tule elk, wild turkey, deer, and other wildlife that call Cache Creek their home. Do you want the experience but didn’t pack a picnic? It’s not a problem, as Cache Creek’s fridge in the tasting room is always fully stocked with a variety of picnic choices to meet every need.
  1. While you’re in the area, a must-see and experience wine destination is Brassfield Estate Winery, located a couple of miles off Highway 20, nestled in the High Valley AVA. Here, spectacular views of Lake County and Clear Lake await. Brassfield’s spacious gardens and gazebo create an intimate picnic experience with many photo opportunities. It’s a great spot for a romantic afternoon with someone special or celebrations of any kind. But be warned, once there, it’s really hard to leave its tranquility and peace.
  1. Head to Wild Diamond Vineyards for a breathtaking mountain-top experience. Morning is the best time to visit: in the clear, crisp air, you’ll capture nearly three hundred and sixty-degree breathtaking views that reach far beyond Lake County. If you’re lucky, you’ll see as far as Sierras. And what you can’t capture with your eyes, a stationary telescope will take your sight even further. Take your time to enjoy the view while enjoying equally impressive wines, hospitality, and a nibble on your favorite picnic foods.
  1. Six Sigma Ranch and Winery is located only a few miles away from Wild Diamond Vineyards. You’ll already know this is no ordinary experience as soon as you turn off Spruce Grove Rd. Glamping tents and the Huttopia resort spread among the vineyards. If you plan your trip right, you might end your day here and spend the night at the resort. But first, wine and a picnic. Continue down this country road and look for sights of wild animals as well as cattle and sheep before reaching the tasting room. This historic stage stop has transformed into a unique wine experience where you can kick back and relax at one of their many shaded picnic areas. It may be country and all, but Six Sigma Ranch and Winery takes its wine rather seriously. And if your picnic fair needs to be replenished, no worries. The tasting room is always ready to serve you. Their fridge is always stocked and they offer handmade charcuterie.

No matter how you do it, you’re in for an unforgettable picnic experience in Lake County, whether just for the day or weekend.
