From Boat to Bowl: The Freshest Catch at Spud Point Crab Company

The sky shines ruby blue, moist salt air caresses your face gently, and your hair welcomes the tussle and imbalance. Your whole being awakens and a broad smile and deep breath complete your arrival. Or is it a blustering gray day when the skyline meets the ocean’s depth, and no line divides grays and rolling waves? The wind humbles even the sure-footed. Add a little drizzle and the scene is complete.

The ocean: It’s the one place on earth that always refreshes no matter the mood. Pull it in a little closer to your destination at Spud Point, where even the harshest weather is mellowed in this fisherman’s cove just off meandering Highway One in Sonoma County.

And like most best-kept secrets, the destination offers a few more twists and turns as your car makes its way down the point where, at low tide, people with shovels, buckets and mucking boots might be in view as they dig for edible discoveries. At high tide, boats strain against the buoys as if seeking to explore with or without their human companions. Large crab pots pile in stacks near the anchored boats, resting after their work.

In the heart of it all is your destination: Spud Point Crab Company. You can’t mistake it. A green antique pickup truck proudly displays a wooden sign with a crab telling you you have arrived. And no matter the time of year or weather, a long line of patrons patiently wait for what, in many minds, just happens to be the best clam chowder on the West Coast. Don’t believe me? Well, give it a try, and we can talk about it.

Take the traditional clam chowder in classic cream sauce; it is rich and creamy, not overcooked or pasty. Full of heavy cream, chunks of clam, evenly cut potatoes, and seasoned delicately with hints of thyme–every bite is perfectly balanced. For a lighter experience, try the Manhattan-style red chowder, which is just as flavorful and much lighter. It’s not to be underestimated, as it has converted many, including yours truly. What could make it more perfect? A loaf of locally made sourdough bread, of course!

In short, there is no wrong way to eat clam chowder at Spud Point. Is chowder not your thing? Well, you can’t go wrong with their classic crab cake. It’s delicate, flaky, moist, rich, and just plain delicious. If you love seafood, Spud Point is a must-do destination for you!

With a full paper bag and a loaf of bread in hand, you can stay and enjoy the experience at one of their outdoor picnic tables or continue your Bodega Bay adventure and find your favorite spot for a picnic with a view. Either way, the clam chowder will stay warm and sure to be enjoyed with the sea in view and the catch of the day in hand. Does life get better than this?

See ya at the Point!
