Enyo and The Pear Tree

During the block walk that summer,
we cut through the walkway to find
pear tree standing tall in the summer sun.

Enyo, the puppy of chaos,
only one or two years old,
lunges into the grass,

noses through the gifts.
Each day, several more fall.
Each day, several more rot.

Sometimes, I let her jump to the lowest branch
and choose right from the source.
Sometimes, I pick all forty pounds of her up.

And each day until the winter claims them,
Enyo and I go to the pear tree,
and she walks home with her prize.
