Lake County Music Guide – 4.2.24

While digging up the info for this week’s live music schedule I ran across something I found to be very interesting. Jake Peavy, a Cy Young-winning badass pitcher who ended his career with the San Francisco Giants after the 2016 season, including playing in the 2014 World Championship Series, is now a touring musician. He, along with longtime Giants 3rd base coach Tim Flannery, plus a star-studded cast of other quality musicians will be playing a concert at the Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, a benefit for the “Sweet Relief Musician’s Fund”, an organization that helps career musicians and other music industry workers “who are struggling to make ends meet while facing physical or mental health issues, disability or age-related problems”.

Back in the ’80-90s a Cotati music store, Zone Music, held a series of local concerts for the same purpose – musicians helping musicians. When I think about these events and the many other concerts where “name-brand rock stars” donated their time to help others; Farm Aid, Live Aid, VetsAid, Concert for Bangladesh, I have a great admiration for these performers. At the expense of sounding pithy – music can be wonderful for so many reasons. And as a baseball fan, all I can say is, “GO JAKE AND TIM”!

Here’s the live music guide for the week of 4/2 through 4/8…

Tuesday really is currently the official first day of the week, mostly because Kelsey Creek Brewing in K’ville brings you the live acoustic music of Buskin’ for Brewskis every Tuesday from 3 to 6:00. And if that ain’t enough, on Sunday you can catch Cowboy Johnson with help from Kraig Jillson and Mike Guarniero playing some heartfelt songs from 2 to 5:00. Not only that but every afternoon they offer a plethora of excellent handcrafted beers, ales and seltzers – all with funny names – that’ll make every Tuesday and Sunday afternoon something to look forward to. I guarantee it!

The Hopland Tap ‘n’ Grill has a special Wednesday in store for you, starting with “Piano-rama” with Wendy DeWitt from 4 to 6:00, then for their Invitational Blues Jam which features Wendy, Kirk, Pierre, Dave and John, get ready for the perfect one-two punch as local LC heroes Dave Broida and Larry “Mojo” Platz bring their stylings of the Blues to what’s already a stellar event – all this and more from 7 to 10:00. I promise you won’t be able to sit still…

If you’re in Lakeport on Wednesday evening, why not drop by Andre’s Lounge and give a listen to pianist Nicky Hinds from 7 to 9:00. Then on Friday namesake Andre himself will be singing with help from his Friend from 8 to 11:00. If “Dad Rock” is your pleasure, on Saturday night Bill Vanderwall will give his dad’s best from 8 to 11:00. Come check out what Andre’s done with the place…

With the Backyard Concerts at the Saw Shop Public House mostly determined by weather this time of year, it becomes an iffy situation for live music. Tony Neves will be inside on Thursday from 6 to 9:00, but as we get closer to the weekend I’ll edit in the schedule if rain is not a factor. Be patient, folks…

After a long Winter, the Middletown Farmers Market reopens on Friday afternoon. There will be early season fresh locally grown fruit and vegetables plus many handcrafted items that make great presents. Plus there will be food vendors to give you added incentive to stick around and check out the music from Brandon Eardley – all from 5 to 8:00.

It’s that time of the month for the 1st Friday Fling at the Main Street Gallery in Lakeport and guitar virtuoso Travis Rinker will make it an exciting evening to remember from 5:30 to 7:00. Always art from some talented local artists on the walls for purchase, also snacks and wine tastings will be available. It’s a great place to start off your night…

Over in Kelseyville at the Smiling Dogs Tasting Room, my new band, AudioSoul, will be rockin’ the place on Friday evening from 6:30 to 9:30. Be sure to bring your dancin’ shoes. SDR wines will be sold by the bottle or glass, and the fun is free…

On Saturday morning, the Farmer’s Finest Farmers Market is happening at the Mercantile Tasting Room in Finley from 10:AM to 1:00. There will be early season fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables plus many handcrafted items that make great presents. The wine tasting room opens at 11:AM so you can either sample or stock up on your wine supplies. There will also be food vendors that go nicely with live music, although I have no idea who is playing at this time. Regardless, it’s a one-stop-shop…

The Riviera Hills Lounge in the Riviera will feature on Saturday the 12-bar magic of Dave Broida and Blues Farm with special guest Johnny Tsunami from 6 to 10:00. Since the time change, it seems the sunset views have gotten even more spectacular than I can remember. Enjoy a meal, some libations then dance to some fun Blues. Take it from the top…

Down in the bayside Riviera, Richmond Park Bar and Grill will bring you on Saturday the music of Under the Influence from 7 to 11:00. There’s always a party goin’ on down at The Park!…

The 1st Sunday Fiddlers Jam is back and happenin’ at the Ely Stage Stop on Soda Bay Rd in the upper Riviarea from noon to 2:00. If you’re jonesin’ for Bluegrass, this is the place. Some of the best pickers from miles around make this their monthly performing spot. They’re pickin’, you’re grinnin’…

On Sunday afternoon the LC Diamonds will be rockin’ the Boathouse/Stowaway Grill in that nice little town of Nice from 2 to 6:00. Should be a fun time, food is great, the bar has just about everything, the music will get your toes tappin’ and the views are forever. What a place to wrap up your weekend?…

Then we have the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake bringing us the usual 6 shows in 5 days, starting with Friday when the Majide Trio will keep you mesmerized with classic Jazz, Bossa Nova and other classic songs from 6 to 8:00. Then on Saturday evening come be impressed with the musical mastery of the Jazz Dudes while you dine from 6 to 8:00. If breakfast is on your personal menu, the BWS Sunday Brunch offers the delectables while Steve Winkle delivers the tunes from 11:30 to 2:00. Later on for Sunday Supper, also from 6 to 8:00, eccentric guitarist and vocalist Steve Smith will make your meal that much more appetizing. For Monday Blues settle in with a good meal while the Mark Weston Band plays from 6 to 8:00. And we can’t forget the 2-Course Tuesday $25 Supper deal while famous musician Paul Kemp tinkles the ivories for your dining pleasure from, you guessed it, 6 to 8:00. Reservations are strongly recommended…

I hope everybody is getting all their planning done for the upcoming Spring/Summer/Fall. I’m having a ball pulling weeds, planning some repairs while getting ready to paint the outside, (the inside is all done), at the same time booking my new band as well as solo gigs. I’m gonna be real busy. So, if and when you all go out this week to enjoy the bounty of live music The LC has to offer, have a fun time, but please be safe…

Mike Guarniero

Mike has been playing professionally, both acoustic and electric, for 40+ years. He paid his dues in a robust Sonoma County music scene during the '80s and '90s, then DJ'd for 10 years after moving to Lake County in 1996. After retiring from his job of 26 years, because he recognized a growing local music scene, he decided to devote his time to playing live music again. He's never looked back. Along with his regular band, Dr. Groove, he has filled in on lead guitar for local bands, (Fargo Bros, Blues Farm, C.A.M. Band, Borrowed Time, Time Travelers). He's played acoustic guitar at a some of our local wineries, restaurants, farmers Markets and art galleries. He's also a semi-regular supporting various local Open Mics around Lake County. He writes and records original songs and has recorded original demos for other performers as well. For the last three years, he has posted on Facebook a local music guide called the Lake County Music Guide.
