As part of her new tenure as the 2024-2026 Lake County Poet Laureate, Brenda Yeager wants to continue a rich tradition of poetry circles, workshops, readings, contests and literary events around the lake. Drawing from her experience in studying with some of our greatest contemporary poets, in both leading and participating in numerous workshops and in teaching high school students, she will aim to foster creativity, inclusion, self-confidence and support among our community writers.

Yeager has already started talking to businesses, teachers, and residents to initiate Lake County’s participation in the Academy of American Poets’ “Poem in Your Pocket Day” on April 18, 2024, during National Poetry Month, to spread the joy of poetry and encourage literacy by distributing poems to Lake County residents. She hopes to collaborate with the Lake County Library as a distribution location as well.

After being so deeply moved by the voices of high school students she taught in the Lake County Arts Council’s Poets & Poetry Program, she feels passionate about bringing students’ truth to our wider community and into local Poetry Boxes, a project created by 2020-2024 Lake County Poet Laureate Georgina Marie Guardado and retired physician and local poet Gary Maes.

Yeager would like to create a workshop specifically for high school students to encourage their participation in community workshops, to support youth writers and enrich our poetry community with multigenerational perspectives. She plans to be involved in the support of and collaboration with the inaugural Lake County Youth Poet Laureate program, initially created by Guardado, as the program is re-initiated in 2024.

Guardado and Yeager encourage local residents interested in the literary arts to join the Lake County Poet Laureate Facebook group to keep up on events, find community, and share work: https://www.facebook.com/groups/LakeCountyPoetLaureateGroup.

Guardado would like to send a special thanks to Fore Family Vineyards, Pamela Bordisso, and the Board of Supervisors for their support in these upcoming events.
