No Dishes, All Joy: Your Holiday Dining Guide

By now, most of us already have our Thanksgiving plans mapped out in great detail, whether we’re staying in town or traveling to see friends and family. I can still recall as a child, the anticipation of four days without school, without chores, and hours and hours of play with my cousins. In later years, it was traveling with a Suburban full of kids and half my house! Since moving to California, I have settled into a new pace of hosting Thanksgiving for my family. It’s less about the hustle and bustle and more about our new holiday traditions that start with great food and move into movie marathons, puzzles, long walks, sipping hot cocoa or apple cider around the fire pit, family games, and ending the weekend with a night of Christmas decorating – and not wanting to eat turkey anything for another year!

But one thing is certain during this holiday season: there will be at least a few meals I’m not going to cook when my family is home. For me, eating out with friends and family is one of my fondest memories because it almost always accompanies Christmas shopping, a holiday concert, a festive parade, or driving to see a holiday light display! And the best part? No dishes for one meal, all the while patting yourself on the back for supporting a local business. Does it really get better than that?

If your holiday plans aren’t solidified just yet, consider eating out on Thanksgiving Day! Here are two restaurants still taking Thanksgiving reservations: The Historic Blue Wing Saloon Restaurant in Upper Lake promises a three-course dining experience where excellence is the name of the game, not only in their food but in the overall dining experience. Also serving a quality three-course meal on Thanksgiving is a locals’ favorite, The Saw Shop Public House in the heart of Kelseyville, where comfort food becomes art no matter what meal you choose! Knowing both restaurants maintain high standards year-round, I’m sure your meal won’t disappoint.

However, if your holiday meal is already planned, here are some spots to consider when entertaining out-of-town family and friends. When in Lakeport, my go-to spot for lunch is Park Place, located next to Library Park, which offers fresh California cuisine. The restaurant makes all its pasta and sauces in-house, so you can’t go wrong with the fettuccini. But it doesn’t really matter what you order. Everything they serve is comfort food!

If it happens to be evening in Lakeport, you can’t get a finer dining experience paired with some of Lake County’s best wines at On the Waterfront; this restaurant offers some of the finest morsels, intentionally curated for sharing with friends or for a romantic evening.

For high-end, thoughtfully planned Thai dishes, look no further than Chalerm Thai Bistro in Lakeport. The restaurant has a pleasant, bright atmosphere that’s perfect for lunch or dinner after shopping. Their Pad Thai is light, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. For the same quality food in South County, Buddha Thai Kitchen in Middletown promises not to disappoint.

For Indian Food, you have two choices: Lakshmi Cuisine of India in Lakport and Arti Natural Indian Cafe in the Riviera, both of which offer some of the finest Indian food I have had. Whether you are hungry for curry or Tikka Masala, your cravings will be satisfied. And if you like your Indian food spicy like I do, they will make you sweat!

In South County, you can be sure to wow your friends at the Greenview Bar & Grill, which takes pride in serving not only fine food but also top-notch service and drinks with an outstanding view, whether stopping for a drink and a bite on a weeknight or looking for their full restaurant menu later in the week. I promise there is something for everyone.

For quick or more casual dining experiences, you can’t go wrong with a true hidden treasure, Danny’s Roadside Kitchen in Lower Lake. Barbecue is done right here, with long smoking times and thoughtful preparation. But it’s got more than just ribs and pulled pork–you’ll also find burgers, sandwiches, and even vegetarian options. It’s an excellent choice for take-out.

And for those of you on the east side of the county, Lucerne Euro Market and Bistro offers fresh ingredients, full flavors, and new food experiences year-round. Everything is made with love; you can taste it with every bite. Even if you don’t live in the area, it is worth the drive!

However you’re doing the holidays this year, one thing is for sure: whether you’re supporting our local grocery stores or eating out locally, you’re making a difference in Lake County’s economy. That’s a win-win for everyone!

And it’s never too soon to join the Lake County EDC in their second annual: Eat, Drink, Shop Local campaign. Learn more here!
