Pay it Forward: Sassys Salon/New Era Barber

I am happy to present to you our nineteenth local business spotlighted in the Pay it Forward feature – Sassys Salon/New Era Barber.

Our recent Lake County business featured was The Shop Coffee-Tea-Etc. and owners, Kim & Evan chose to Pay it Forward to Sonja Samuels, owner of Sassys Salon/New Era Barber.

The catch is that I will not choose the next business to interview, but the current spotlighted business will choose who I will interview next. Local businesses will Pay it Forward.

Sassys Salon is a five star locally owned and operated beauty salon, offering many various services – everything from tanning (stand up and vertical beds). They also specialize in haircuts, color, highlights, balayage, lash extensions, waxing and services related to cosmetology and nails. Their services are top notch with a friendly atmosphere and a pleasant staff to boot.

1. Why did you decide to start your own business?

I started as a manicurist in 2005. I worked at Blondie’s Alley Cuts with an incredible lady for many years. In 2018 I decided to open my own salon so I could add tanning beds. One of the best decisions I have made. I’ve met so many amazing people over the years.

2. What advice would you give to someone just starting their own business?

The advice I would give to someone just starting their own business is to stay positive.

3. What routines do you follow each day?

I tell myself it is going to be a great day. Being a creature of habit I have morning routines before coming to my salon. Once at the salon I make sure everything is clean and stored for my clients. I really look forward to not only my regular clients but meeting new ones, too.

4. Where do you see your business in five years? Ten?

I see my business in years to come with having more services to offer customers. Right now Anthony A. is a barber known as New Era Barber, Joseph N. is also a barber, with two apprentices Ginna O. (nails/cosmetology), Yaneth S. (cosmetology) and Amber C. (cosmetology).

5. How did you market your business when it was brand new?

I was in the industry for many years before becoming an owner so I know quite a lot of people. I also offer discounts, raffle services with word of mouth being a huge success and very much appreciated.

6. If you could spend the day with anyone (living or who has passed on) who would it be and why?

I would love to spend a day with my dad. It’s been 25 years since I’ve seen or been able to talk to him in person. I have accomplished so many things in life and he would be the one cheering me on!
