Massage and Bodywork by Sarah Genetiano is locally owned by Sarah Genetiano and operated within Sage Salon & Spa in Hidden Valley Lake. She specializes in deep tissue, relaxation (Swedish), trigger point, pregnancy and therapeutic massage. Sarah has been licensed in massage and bodywork since 2006.

1. Why did you decide to start your own business?

As a massage therapist specializing in bodywork, I’m not only dedicated to helping clients find balance and rejuvenation but also to creating a warm and welcoming space where they can escape the stresses of daily life. Being a proud mom of four and a former military wife, I understand the importance of self-care and relaxation. That’s why, after spending some time as a stay-at-home mom, I teamed up with my business partner, Jen Noonis, to open Sage Salon & Spa in Hidden Valley Lake. It’s been a journey fueled by my passion for holistic wellness. I’ve created a sanctuary where clients can experience personalized massage therapy services amidst the tranquil atmosphere of our salon.

My journey began in Oregon, where I honed my skills in the art of relaxation. The tranquil vibes of Hawaii further enriched my holistic approach during my extensive training there, allowing me to incorporate a unique blend of techniques and philosophies into my practice. My background in various salon and spa environments has equipped me with a deep understanding of luxury and client care, which I strive to infuse into every session.

Currently, I am dedicated to serving the community in Lake County, California, where I weave my passion for holistic wellness into each massage. Beyond my professional role, I am a lifelong learner, continually seeking to enhance my skills and provide the utmost care to those who seek balance and rejuvenation. Starting my own business has not only allowed me to pursue my professional dreams but also to offer a personalized and deeply fulfilling experience to each of my clients.

2. What advice would you give to someone just starting their own business?

When starting out, it’s smart to go for the most cost-effective routes to keep expenses low. You don’t need to invest in an expensive website right away; there are plenty of affordable or even free options that can serve your needs at first. Give yourself room to grow into your business and scale up as your client base and revenue increase.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Building a support network of mentors, colleagues, and professionals can be life-changing as you navigate the ups and downs of starting a business. Plus, you might even make some great friends along the way!

Take a good look at your finances to make sure you understand your budget and expenses. Research the cost of products and services in your industry to price your offerings just right. This is key for keeping your business sustainable and profitable. Before making decisions, dive into your research! Whether it’s about choosing the right location, investing in equipment, or figuring out marketing strategies, being well-informed will help you make better choices and avoid costly mistakes.

Social media is your friend when it comes to promoting your business. Having an active and engaging online presence is one of the best ways to get noticed, especially since it’s free and has a huge reach. Make sure your social media accounts are set up and regularly updated with content that reflects your brand and services.

Advertising and marketing are very important for growing your business. With the right strategies, you can attract new clients and keep your current ones excited about what you offer. Spend some time getting to know your target audience and creating messages that really click with them—it can make a big difference! Whether you’re using social media, participating in local events, or teaming up with other businesses, getting the word out about your services is key to building a thriving business.

Finally, surround yourself with like-minded professionals who share your vision and values. Working with others in your field can give you amazing support and inspiration, especially during tough times. They can offer new perspectives, share resources, and even send clients your way. Building these relationships can help keep you motivated and focused on your goals, ensuring your passion and energy stay strong as you grow your business.

3. What routines do you follow each day?

Each day, I arrive well before my first appointment to ensure everything is perfectly prepared for my clients. As I enter the serene space, I am greeted by the soft glow of candles and the gentle hum of our fountain, which I turn on to create a peaceful ambiance. The soothing scent of essential oils fills the air as I prepare my diffuser, carefully selecting a blend that will enhance relaxation and well-being.

I take the time to ready the massage table, making sure it is warm and comfortable, with the table warmer set to the perfect temperature. Fresh towels are placed in the towel warmer, so they are cozy and inviting for my clients. The room is softly lit, and I adjust the temperature to ensure a comfortable environment, whether it requires a touch of heat or a cool breeze from the air conditioning.

This routine allows me to center myself, creating a calm and welcoming atmosphere that reflects the care and attention I put into my practice. By the time my clients arrive, I am fully present and ready to provide a personalized and rejuvenating experience, ensuring they feel relaxed and pampered from the moment they step through the door.

4. Where do you see your business in 5 years? Ten?

My business goals at this time for the next 5-10 years include establishing a large and loyal clientele base. By providing exceptional services and building strong relationships with clients, the aim is to become the go-to destination for relaxation and rejuvenation in the Hidden Valley Lake area.

In addition to enhancing the current offerings, there’s an aspiration to open a second location in the future. This expansion would not only increase accessibility for clients but also extend the reach of the business to new communities.

By continuing to prioritize exceptional customer service and maintain a welcoming and nurturing environment, I aim to not only achieve my business goals, but also to make a lasting impact on the well-being and happiness of my clients.

Looking ahead, I’m thrilled about the possibility of teaming up with other businesses to offer some truly unique experiences. One idea that really excites me is the concept of mobile venue options. Whether it’s setting up a tranquil oasis at a corporate retreat, a bridal shower, or a wellness event, the idea of providing my signature services in different settings is incredibly appealing. Collaborating with local event planners, businesses, and organizations opens up a world of possibilities, allowing me to reach new audiences and create unforgettable moments wherever I go.

5. How did you market your business when it was brand new?

When I was brand new, I was fortunate to connect with a business development coach who provided invaluable guidance on how to kickstart my marketing efforts. Attending classes and workshops focused on business growth in Lake County proved to be a turning point in my business. With their encouragement, I committed to updating my booking site, setting up my Google Business profile, and put together a comprehensive business and marketing plan. This laid a solid foundation for my online presence and outreach efforts.

However, marketing a business while keeping up with clients can be a real juggling act. I quickly learned to hand off tasks that I either didn’t have time for or wasn’t all that great at. It kept things rolling smoothly, freeing me up to focus on giving my clients the service they deserve and enjoying some personal family time.

Regular sessions with my business development coach have become the cornerstone of my marketing strategy. Together, we brainstormed ideas, refined messaging, and create compelling marketing materials tailored for my audience. A fresh perspective has been huge in getting my brand out there and connecting with more folks in the community.

6. If you could spend the day with anyone (living or who has passed on) who would it be and why?

One person, living or dead, who really captivates me, is Robin Williams. He was something else! What I find fascinating about him is his incredible range. He could switch from serious to funny in the blink of an eye. And the way he carried himself, you’d never guess he was going through struggles—he hid it so well. But what really gets me is his heart. Did you know that for every movie he starred in, he insisted on hiring homeless people for roles? That’s the kind of compassion that just shines through.

He seems to have had this amazing ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Whether he was on screen or off, he just had this light about him. And the impact he had—wow! He touched so many lives, probably way more than he ever realized. That’s what I aspire to do as a human being. Leave behind a positive mark, just like Robin did. He may be gone, but his spirit lives on in all those he inspired.
