What is it about shoes that we love so much? Is it that they match our mood? Or does it only matter if they match our attire? There is no doubt in my mind that a person’s shoes say as much about them as the shirt they are wearing, the car they drive, and possibly more.
A pair of nice, shiny shoes compels us to believe and respect one person over another. A pair of flip-flops brings a feeling of ease and relaxation on a sunny evening on the porch, while a sturdy pair of sneakers conveys a message of health and fitness. Whether we like it or not, shoes tell a great deal about who we are and those we interact with. Back in the day, if I saw a shoe I liked, I just bought it and thought nothing of the damage I was doing to my feet in the long term.
Then came my 40s, and all my days of running, dancing, dropping, bumping, and injuring my feet in my youth caught up to me, and I found my foot in the hands of a podiatrist.
“You have arthritis in your big toe, Trudy,” he told me. “I can see it just looking at it.”
“So, what can I do about it?” I eagerly replied.
“Buy new shoes,” he said, picking up my sandals in one hand and bending them.
“You have to have stiff soles to support your toe, not like these. There is a shoe shop in Lakeport by Safeway called The Shoe Box. They are cute and will give you good support.”
Those were my doctor’s orders: buy new shoes and never wear more than a two-inch heel. I tried to negotiate the heel in inches, but he wouldn’t budge—a grudge I hold to this day. Sigh.
Thus grew my obsession with The Shoe Box. I have sandals for summer that can be dressed up or down, flip-flops for the pool, heeled dress boots for the winter, Uggs for staying at home on a rainy, stormy day, dress shoes that sparkle on the rare occasion I dress up, and tennis shoes for exploring. And did I mention slippers?
