LOBA POETRY SERIES
Monthly Poet Features & Open Mic

Join Ukiah Branch Library staff as we host poetry events in-person on the third Saturdays of each month at 3 p.m. This free event is open to both teens and adults. All are invited to share poems in any form or style, or just listen to others. On September 19, we welcome Shizue Seigel.

Seigel is a Japanese American writer and visual artist living in San Francisco. Seigel’s passion for social justice arises from her family’s incarceration in American concentration camps during World War II, which led to her childhood as an Army brat in segregated Baltimore, postoccupation Japan, skid-row Stockton, and strawberry sharecropping camps. As an adult, her search for purpose in an unjust world continued in the Haight-Ashbury, Indian ashrams,
corporate offices, public housing, and needle exchanges. In 2015, she established Write Now!

SF Bay to support writers/artists of color through readings, workshops, exhibitions, and anthologies funded by California State Library, California Arts Council, San Francisco Arts Commission, and others. Her nine books include “Uncommon Ground: BIPOC Journeys to Creative Activism,” “Civil Liberties United,” and three other BIPOC anthologies, a poetry collection, and three books on the Japanese American experience.

WINES & SPINES BOOK CLUB
Monthly Book Discussions (Offsite, In-Person)

Adults 21 and over are invited to join our monthly book club, Wines & Spines. We will meet at The Beehive restaurant in downtown Ukiah on the last Thursday evening of each month from 5:30 to 7 p.m., except for holidays when we will meet on the 3rd Thursday.

Studies show reading for pleasure reduces anxiety and increases our capacity for compassion. Join us for the long-awaited return of this popular book club for monthly discussions on thought-provoking books through a social justice lens. We will read novels and memoirs including “All Fours” by Miranda July, “Better Living through Birding” by Christian Cooper, and “The Night Watchman” by Louise Erdrich.

A full list is available at the Ukiah Branch Library. Please email Melissa Carr at:
carrm@mendocinocounty.gov or call 234-2862 to sign up.

AMBLE & RAMBLE
A Walking Any-Book Book Club for Adults

The Ukiah Branch Library will be offering a new book club, “Amble & Ramble,” starting September 26. It will meet on the last Saturday of each month from noon to 1 p.m. on the Great Redwood Trail. We will meet on Perkins St. near the old Train Depot.

Adults 21 and over are invited to participate. We welcome discussion and sharing about any book you are currently reading. No need to plan or pick up a designated book for this one – just show up when you can!

The Great Redwood Trail is ADA accessible. For more information, contact (707) 463-4490 or carrm@mendocinocounty.gov. Sponsored by the Mendocino County Library and the Friends of the Ukiah Valley Library.

PRODUCE & PANTRY SHARE
Free Food at the Ukiah Library

The Yokayo Seed Project is hosting our annual Produce & Pantry Share series this fall. Bring your surplus homegrown produce or non-perishable pantry goods to share. Prevent food waste and feed the community!

Here’s how it works: Community members bring their surplus homegrown produce or non-perishable, non-expired, unopened pantry items to the Ukiah Library. Everyone is invited to visit the library during the event to pick up the free produce and food to take home.

These events will take place on the following dates from 2 to 4 p.m.: August 29, September 26, and October 24. The Ukiah Valley Friends of the Library and the Mendocino County Library sponsor this event.

Come hang out, eat yummy snacks, and meet other teens in the Teen Room at the Ukiah Branch Library on September 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. This program is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Ukiah Valley Library.
