Lake County Music Guide: 10.13 – 10.20

I’ve probably gone to about 10-12 of the Blue Wing’s Blues Festivals over the last 20 years, but last Sunday’s show featuring Aki Kumar & the Bollywood Blues Band was by far the most entertaining. If and when he comes back into town, the Blues lovers among you should make it a must-see. I was bobbin’ my head to the music so much, I think I might have given myself whiplash! Good stuff, Maynard! Here’s what’s up for this week, 10/13 through 10/20…

This last weekend was, for me, a weekend of joy, love, celebration, and sadness. No, I didn’t get remarried – been there, done that! On Saturday, my friend who most people know as “Dancing Donna” just celebrated her 80th birthday, and a bash was held at the home of Jason Rehder. Then on Sunday I attended the Celebration of Life for local singer and friend Machiko Shimada at the Blue Wing Saloon. So much love at both events, with memories that should last a lifetime. And speaking of the Blue Wing, just a reminder that this is the weekend of the rescheduled Blue Wing Blues Festival. Let’s see what else we have in store for this week. Here’s the live music schedule for the week of 10/6 through 10/13…

With the cooler evenings, we’re seeing a few outdoor music venues start to roll up their sidewalks. Last weekend was the last of the regularly scheduled Boathouse shows for 2026; this Thursday will end this year’s Fults Family Winery Concerts. We might not see too many more outdoor gigs at the Riviera. A couple of places still push the envelope on warm-weather outdoor shows, but it’s been a good Summer of music all in all. And it’s getting to that time when we decide to pull another blanket out of our cedar chests and fold it at the foot of the bed, just in case. But don’t despair, there’s still gonna be live music in the county, so here’s the schedule for the week of 9/29 through 10/6…

This week will be all about the Kelseyville Pear Festival, prolly the most exciting of all the annual events that happen in LC. And it happens on Saturday, although there is an opening act: the Pear Festival Farm to Fork Dinner Dance that precedes it on Friday – it’s all about the pears! Also, today is the 1st day of Autumn. Hope you all had a nice Summer. Here’s the live music schedule for the week of 9/22 through 9/29…

The Lucas Fire kinda put a damper on some activities this past weekend, especially the Blue Wing’s Blues Festival, but they made the right call postponing it until October 10th and 11th. Now, let’s hope they maintain a good handle on it, because we have another happenin’ week of live music to look forward to during this last week of Summer. Here’s the live music schedule for the week of 9/15 through 9/22…

I say this every year; once Labor Day has come and gone, the live music drops off like snowboarding over a cliff. However, it makes it easier for me to write it all up, and for you, a silver lining – you get quality, not quantity, and you don’t have to stress out over all the shows you can’t make. But I would be remiss if I forgot to mention this is the weekend of the Blue Wing’s Blues Festival on Saturday and Sunday evenings. I believe tix are still available for the Sunday show. Anyhoo, here’s the live music schedule for the week of 9/8 through 9/15…

Okay, I’m in my 70s, so I’m entitled to whinge from time to time, right?!? (“Hey, you kids, git off my lawn!”…) Anyways, the most vital key to being able to write up this music guide is knowing what’s happenin’. Some bands, solo acts, even venues EMAIL or message their schedules to me – thank you, guys!… But there are still many musicians, venues, and fans who sort of take it for granted that I’m Carnac the Magnificent, a seer who knows all, sees all, reads the tea leaves, and promotes the music completely and perfectly. However, I’m not that fortunate – I’m just plain ol’ Mike – so I beg you all, please keep me informed. I write things up on Monday, post on Tuesday – so let me know by the previous Sunday. Okay, I’m taking a deep breath – “Serenity now”! I feel much better. Here’s your live music schedule for the week of 9/1 through 9/8…

I’m sitting here rockin’ out to some Classical Music, you know, all that longhair stuff, and I made a discovery. When I listen to Rock, Blues, Reggae, even Americana, I get easily distracted. I’m constantly looking to see who the artist is, maybe grabbing my guitar to play along, looking for vids. But I found Classical to be calming, not distracting. Perhaps that’s the difference between me taking 7 hours to put this music guide together and only 3 hours with Classical blasting over the stereo. Maybe Arnold was actually saying, “I’ll be Bach!” … Anyways, here’s the live music schedule for the week of 8/18 through 8/25…

It’s gonna be a hot week, but the music should be even hotter! So, let’s not waste time with frivolous blather (um, the Department of Redundancy Dept has just informed me that frivolous blather is redundant…), here’s the live music schedule for the week of 8/4 through 8/11…

I did some bar hopping this past weekend when I caught a fun band playing all the stuff I was into when I was a young man (maybe 100 years ago), called the Classic Set. They were quite good; you should check ‘em out Thursday at the Saw Shop. The Kelseyville Street Dance will be happening at the same time just down the street, so bar hopping will be encouraged. Is it any wonder I call Kelseyville the center of the universe? Here’s all the rest of the live music scheduled for the week of 7/14 through 7/21…

This week will present somewhat of an anomaly; it’s the middle of summer, and there’s not as much music going on as we’ve been experiencing lately. But that’s okay because the events that ARE happening this week should make up for it. Here’s the live music schedule for the week of 7/7 through 7/14…

It’s the 4th of July, the 250th USA Anniversary, this weekend, so I’d like to first post where the fireworks are:

Friday, fireworks at Lakeport Speedway

Friday in Clearlake Oaks

Friday at Konocti Vista Casino

Saturday at Library Park Lakeport

Saturday at Austin Park Clearlake.

And where there are fireworks, you might also find live music. And it seems appropriate that the week of the 4th of July is also Billy Watson week, and you should be able to pick at least one of his shows. Here’s the live music schedule for the week of 6/30 through 7/7…

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, it just keeps on getting more fun each week! And now that we’re into the month of June, there are a few new musical events that we can get all geeked up about – Kelseyville Street Dance, Lakeport Concerts, Hidden Valley Lake Concerts, Smiling Dogs Humpday Howlers, Baconfest, and if you don’t mind the drive, the Willits 1st Friday Summer Concert series happens. Oh, and there’s still tix available for the Lakeside Jam Festival in July. So much live music, too little time! But, HEY, once again I’m still trying to sell my used ACME Clone-a-Matic (needs work), but think about it – you’ll never miss another music event. Here’s the live music line-up for the week of 6/2 through 6/9. OH, AND BE SURE TO VOTE ON TUESDAY…

The other four are – Lower Lake Daze, Reggae by the Lake Konocti Vista Concerts, Konocti Harbor Concerts, and lastly, Tommy Rox is back in The LC for the Summer. I can already smell the scents of tanning butter and BBQ wafting through the air! But grab those reins tight, there’s mucho musica happenin’ this week. Hey Folks, Because the LC Fair starts August 29th, I just wanted to remind you that this 4-day fest is chock full of musical events that will feature many of our favorite local bands. The line-up will include The Andy Rossoff Trio, Still Kickin’, Beatz Werkin’, The Hip Replacements, Pierre Archain, Audio Soul, The Majide Trio, Irma Lopez, Stevie & the Shufflenuts, and Austin and Owens. A week from now I will post their schedules so you can make plans when to go. Personally, I just go for the corndogs and beer, but there’s so many other featured events that you all might like even better, (although, really, what’s better than corndogs and beer?)… In the meantime, the weather will be much more forgiving during these next couple of weeks, so there should be no excuse for not catching some of your favorite live music. Plus, it’s gonna be a week of “lasts”, where some of our outdoor Summer events will offer their last presentation of the year. Here’s the live music schedule for the week of 8/13 through 8/19…

Lake County Music Guide – 10.31.23

I just read how there are quite a few slang words many of us Boomers and Millennials still use that have become so outdated it’s embarrassing to some to just hear them used. Words like; groovy, rad, fo shizzle, tubular, cowabunga, righteous, bitchin, bogus, cool beans, word and psyche. Bummer, Dude, that eliminates most of my vocabulary… Slang is for the most part a regional expression and much of it is embedded in the lexicon associated with certain eras. Well, maybe I’m just getting senile, but I stand by the slang words I grew up with. Who’s with me?!?… Um…, okay, here’s the live music guide for the week of 10/31 through 11/6…

The good news: it’s gonna be a pretty busy week in terms of holidays and observances, where Hannukkah started two days ago on Sunday, Winter Solstice happens on Wednesday, Christmas is on Sunday and the doubleheader of Kwanzaa and Boxing Day occurs on Monday. The bad news: because Christmas eve is on Saturday and Christmas Day is on Sunday, many places will be closed for these observances. But despite those days being sans live music, there’s at least one joint each day from Tuesday through Saturday to go out and get your live music fix. WOOHOO!!! Here’s the schedule, plus an updated NYE rundown for the week of 12/20 through 12/26.

Lake County Music Guide – 12.13.22

“Eenie weenie chili beanie, the spirits are about to speak!” Anybody out there remember where this famous quote came from? Here’s a hint… Boris Badenov referred to this dynamic duo as “Moose ‘n’ Squirrel.” Okay, times up! It’s a line from the Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, which aired from 1959 through 1964. Like most kids, I would watch cartoons, but this was pretty much the only one I really liked because it was silly in a Three Stooges sort of way – full of puns, sarcasm, self-referential dialog, and other socially unacceptable wordplays, especially so for impressionable children like I was. I would watch the show with friends, laughing hysterically – but they didn’t really get it. I could relate to the patience and empathy of Rocket J Squirrel, marveled at the perseverance of Bullwinkle J Moose, who never stopped trying despite his constant failures, and sneered at the comic depiction of Boris Badenov, Natasha Fatale, and Fearless Leader. This, to me, was cartooning at its comic best. Okay, maybe I’m entering into my second childhood, but I hope you don’t mind me including references to the show throughout this music schedule. Here’s the live music guide for the week of 12/13 through 12/19…

Lake County’s Musical Ambassador: Meet Mike Guarniero

While you may not know musician Mike Guarniero personally, odds are you’ve seen him play. For years he has been involved in the Lake County music scene and played with over twenty different bands. You might have heard him play with his band, Dr. Groove, which regularly has performed in the county. Or you might have caught his Lake County Music Guide, which posts on Facebook and in The Bloom (when there is live music).
Sitting in the courtyard of Pogo’s Pizza in Kelseyville earlier this week with Mike felt as if we were seated with a long-time friend we haven’t seen in a while. You might feel the same if you are a music lover in Lake County; Mike’s friendly personality makes conversation easy.
