Shadows Of Moonset
In the shadows of the moonset
When the stars have not yet
Winked themselves to sleep,
In the deep of the pre-dew dawn
While the fairies still dance on toadstools
And coyotes cackle on ridgelines
I walk into depths of pine.
Only coffee-eyed commuters pass,
Early morning drivers still pushing
Sleep from the corners of their minds.
The darkened road leaves no place for footsteps
But the dog knows the way,
Small paws pattering the pavement.
I feel your spirit walk beside
Me in the darkness like a friend
Steps mirroring mine
And I know that if my hand
Were two inches to the right
It would bump into you.
And you dive into the depths with me
One foot after the other until the light shifts
And moonshadows become the quiet
Stillness of a lover's stroll.
